Why steam, not press

A blazer has shape built into it: shoulder padding, a rolled lapel, a canvas chest. An iron flattens all of that along with the wrinkles. Steam works the other way around. Hot vapor relaxes the fibers while the jacket hangs in its own shape, so the creases drop and the tailoring stays. That is the whole reason this shelf exists next to the irons.

The pass

Hang the piece on a proper hanger, hook it somewhere it can swing a little, and work from the shoulders down. Hold the hem with your spare hand so the panel is taut, and keep the steamer head moving in slow strokes a touch away from the cloth. Gravity does half the work: a wrinkle you soften at the shoulder walks itself out by the hem. Lapels like a pass from underneath, which puffs the roll back up instead of crushing it.

Heat-up is the real spec

Most steaming happens in the ten minutes before you leave, so the wait matters. Our quickest handheld reaches steam in 25 seconds, and the rest of the shelf sits at 1000 to 1200 watts, which is enough to hold a steady plume through a jacket and a pair of trousers. When the tank runs low mid-garment, top it up and carry on; there is no board to reset.

After the last stroke

Give the garment a few minutes on the hanger before it goes on your back. Warm damp fibers take a new crease as eagerly as they dropped the old one. Empty the tank, stand the steamer upright until it cools, and check the plug before a trip: one of our handhelds is built for 120 volt outlets only, while the travel shelf switches between 110-120 and 220-240.
